Pediatrics Q & A

What is pediatrics?

Dr. Olusanya is highly trained to include pediatrics as part of his family medicine practice. Pediatrics is the field of medicine that focuses on health care for infants, children, and adolescents.

It’s common for your child to see a pediatrician through age 18, but Dr. Olusanya serves as your primary care physician and sees you and your children through every age and every stage of life.

The goal of a pediatrician is to prevent, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic illnesses and injuries. Additionally, Dr. Olusanya helps your child with:

  • Developmental delays
  • Social problems
  • Mental health disorders
  • Behavioral concerns

Charter Medical Center also offers the necessary vaccinations for your child.

How often should my child see a pediatrician?

During the first few months and years of life when your fast-growing children are developing rapidly, you should see Dr. Olusanya on Charter Medical Center’s designated well-child schedule. In general, until your child is about two years old, you should plan to see the doctor every three months.

As your child grows older and is healthy, you’ll only need to come in for annual well-child check-ups. Of course, Dr. Olusanya and the team are always available when your child gets sick or hurt and needs immediate attention.

Does my child need immunizations?

It’s probable that your child will require a few vaccinations and Dr. Olusanya can offer the proper immunizations for your child’s specific needs. Usually, children receive several rounds of vaccinations and booster shots in their first years of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following immunizations:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Rotavirus
  • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Polio
  • Varicella
  • Influenza
  • DIphtheria
  • Pertussis
  • Pneumococcal
  • Tetanus

As your child gets older, Dr. Olusanya will talk to you about specific vaccinations typically given during the teen years.

What can I expect during a pediatric well-child visit?

During your child’s visit with Dr. Olusanya, he’ll check their:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Blood pressure
  • Pulse
  • Vision
  • Hearing

Part of your visit includes a full physical evaluation, a thorough discussion of your child’s medical history, and a discussion about your health goals and concerns for your child.
